For example, if you had one icon that was US dollars, another icon that was Company A stock, and another icon that was Company B stock, you could click on the US dollar icon and it would show you the comparison value between USD and Company A stock and USD and Company B stock (this could highlight rises and drops in value of the stocks or the USD). The various views can be changed by a user clicking on a particular icon.
